The Zeitgeist Movie

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

After more then a year one of the most downloaded Movies on the Internet found the way on my computer. The Zeitgeist Movie!

It s a documentary that is free for download on the web and it s even possible to stream it. It is translated or subtitled into more then 20 languages.

I really loved it because it does summarize a lot of stuff I concluded for me already. I think it s absolutely worth to watch both documentaries because the second part explains a lot about the background of the monetary system and gives some advices about measures people can take to make a change.

I can not say that everything is true they say. How could I know? But I’ve got to say that there explanations do make a lot more sense to me then the mainstream explanations. I think these movies are a valuable commitment to a healthy discourse a society needs. The measures suggested at the end of the Zeigeist: ADDENDUM Movie are more common sense for me then something revolutionary new.

When I talk to people about this movie most of them are very doubtful. They can’t believe that what they say is true. But why? Because they say that it does not make sense what the movie states? No - most of them say that it s not true because it would question all or a lot they believed in so far in their life. It is way easier just to keep on going like you always did. I did not talk to a lot of people about the movie but I think you can get a kind of feeling for th perception of the movie in the society if you read the Wikipedia article for it.

Zeitgeist, the Movie is a 2007 documentary film exposé on contemporary religion, government, and global economics. Focal points of the film are the Jesus myth, the attacks of 9/11, and the US Federal Reserve Bank. A number of conspiracy theories are presented…

A conspiracy theoriy? What does that exactly mean? Lets ask Wikipedia again:

A conspiracy theory is a hypothesis that alleges a coordinated group is, or was, secretly working to commit illegal or wrongful actions, including attempting to hide the existence of the group and its activities. In notable cases the hypothesis contradicts what was, or is, represented as the mainstream explanation for historical or current events. The phrase “conspiracy theory” is also sometimes used dismissively in an attempt to portray hypothetical speculation as being untrue or outlandish.

Illegal? Not necessarily. Lots of the actions the movie explains are not violating any laws. Laws are in place to protect lots of this crimes done to humanity.

sometimes used dismissively? Obviously, whoever is in power does not want to endanger his status. So he has to denigrate any other way of explanation.

Hypothesis (that) contradicts mainstream explanation? That makes sense.

There is no unquestionable truth. The only thing I know is that the official (mainstream) version is not true at all. If the financial crisis did show us anything then that our financial system is sick and we should rather think about an alternative instead of throwing more money in a system that is made to fail!

So watch it make up your own mind!

(Still) Not Here . . .

Friday, November 28th, 2008

I’ve physically got back to Freiburg almost 2 months ago.
I’ve not been here all the time. I went to Paris, twice back to my hometown, one to Mannheim and once to Milan.
Nevertheless I m still somewhere else.
I m fine as long as I m busy. I m working quite a lot for the University since I m back. I do really enjoy my studies since I m back. I m way more interested in the texts I read. I try some new stuff. Meet some new people but there is exactly my problem.

I don t feel comfortable, interested stimulated by the people I meet. I m talking, listening but I don t understand. Maybe I don t want to understand.
My motivation to go out is almost not existent. My social curiousness disappeared. People do look so boring to me.

I m starting to judge people - or better I judge what they are doing. I can t stand the talks about nonsense in the train. I can t stand the ignorance of young people in the street. I can t stand so many things.

I actually don t think that in Latin America it was different. There were many things which are similar I think. People talk about nonsense everywhere in the world. Maybe I could overlook these facts easier in Latin America because I always knew I m going to return to Europe soon. If you are far away the positive memories of your “homeland” are stronger then the bad aspects.

There are some exceptions. Some very special persons I know here are excluded from this problem. These people are almost all closely related to me or share some very special experiences.

I guess I m right now again in the phase I predicted in June 2008.

I m getting back - but I m still not sure if I want to. . . If I can

Milan for the Weekend

Monday, November 17th, 2008

The main motivation to go to Milan this weekend was born approx. 3 weeks ago when I ve read a feature on Indymedia Germany about the student protest in Italy.
Since there were new protests announced for the 14 of November I ve bought a train ticket from Milan to Freiburg (to be sure to get back in time to attend my seminars) and searched a host on BeWelcome for this time.
On Thursday morning I stood on the ramp to the A5 direction south. Hitchhiking was easier this time then on my last experience to Paris. I ve got picked up by a guy who brought me to the next gas station on the Highway within 5 minutes.
There I ve searched for around 15 min and then had a truck which was going to Varese (25 km from Milan). Even though it was a truck and it cost me hours o nthe borders I wasn t worried. Rather a safe, slow ride with panoramic views then getting lost somewhere on the way. I was supposed to read some texts for University anyway.
At around 7 pm I was arriving in Milan a guy from the Philippines helped me to find the address of my host.
I was again very lucky. Since I ve wrote already in my messages to the BeWelcome members why I was visiting Milan I found a politically active guy in his early 40s who helped me a lot with understanding Italy. We had very nice discussion and awesome food!
On Friday morning I went into the city to participate in the Protests against the educational reforms of the Berlusconi government and worte my article for Indymedia in the evening.
On Saturday we went to a strange concert of electro-music and had dinner late at night with some other friends.
On Sunday morning I was already on my way back “home”.
It was amazing to ride the train through the alps. Before the Gotthard tunnel we had amazing wheater and I was chatting with to Argentinian women for two hours until they left the train. Afterwards I studied in my textbooks and listened to the people around me in the EuroCity. It was a real Eurocity. I ve heared at least 5 languages in the seats around me. It was a very nice but in the end a little bit too long (6,5 hours) trip.

I spend in total 70 € on this weekend (45 € for the trai nand 25 € food and local transport) and I had a very beautiful and sunny weekend in Milan with wonderful people. Even though I enjoyed it very much I want to stay here in Freiburg for a while now… let s see if this is going to work out!

What is addiction and who benefits from addiction?

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

I ve observed it now a couple of times and I m sure others did so as well. Friends or colleagues look kind of unhealthy. They are pale-faced, look overtired, they have problems with concentrating on their work, they always talk about the same stuff, seem kind of disconnected to the real world, etc.
Overall I m guessing they ve got a drug problem. They change their social habits. Stick at home, barely leave to buy food (most of the time they call a delivery service.
So what could it be? Cocaine is unlikely - that “just” ruins you economicly and fucks up your brain and nose on the long run. Marijuana is told to have effects like that - at least thats what “they” tell us. So is it this weed?

This morning I picked up the Newspaper and saw this advertisement in our local Newspaper.
Advertisement from Media Markt on 9.11.08.
A free Sunday-Newspaper which reaches every household in the region. It promotes the fact that Media Markt opens from midnight Wednesday to Thursday morning at 2 am to sell the new World of Warcraft Addon.
Wow - I ve thought. Thats weired that they are opening just for the selling of a computer game (well I assume you are allowed to buy other stuff as well). But, as always, we can be sure that this is well calculated so it s worth to give an extra pay (if they do so) for their employees to open in the middle of the night.

The symptoms I was writing about in the beginning of this post was not about a “normal” drug (illegal by federal law). No I was describing the symptoms of friends who got addicted to the Computer game World of Warcraft. The Addon to World of Warcraft is launched in Germany on the 13. of November so Media Markt wants to be the first dealer who satisfies the needs of his addicts. It seems like there are enough human beings around who are willing to wait at midnight in front of a Media Markt (on a weekday) to buy a Computer game which will keep them in front of the computer for several days, weeks, months, … who knows?

I m not calling for the government to intervene in the selling of World of Warcraft but I ask myself how you justify the intervention in the consuming habits of one product and ignorance in others. Don t get me wrong. I don t want to make “gameing” illegal. But I think that some things should just not be allowed to be promoted too much… Tobacco, Beverages, Drugs, Computer games, GM foods, …

BTW: I ve found an amazing video: The Story of Stuff! Check it out!
